Microneedling with PRP vs. Traditional Microneedling: What's the Difference?

9/12/2025

If you've been researching ways to refresh your complexion, you've probably come across a procedure called microneedling. This treatment is known for reducing wrinkles and fine lines, minimizing enlarged pores, and improving overall skin tone and texture. But what about microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (also known as PRP)? Many patients wonder whether adding PRP actually makes a difference or not.

The short answer: yes! While both options can support skin rejuvenation, combining microneedling with PRP can enhance results by boosting the body's natural healing process. At Starr MedSpa, our providers offer both options and can help you decide which one is best for you. Call or text our office to book an appointment and learn more.

What is Microneedling with PRP?

Traditional microneedling is a skin treatment that uses a device with fine needles to create micro-injuries in the skin. This stimulates the body's natural healing process and triggers new collagen and elastin production. At Starr MedSpa, we use the SkinPen which was the first FDA-approved microneedling device on the market and has a myriad of research backing it's results.

PRP is obtained by collecting a small sample of your blood and spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the platelet-rich plasma (PRP). The PRP is then extracted and applied to the skin, microneedling it in so that it penetrates deep through the micro-channels. This helps enhance skin healing and delivers more visible improvements.

How Microneedling Improves the Skin

One to two weeks after a microneedling session, patients often notice smoother skin, a reduction in wrinkles and fine lines, and a tighter overall texture, including smaller pores and a softening of the appearance of scars.

Adding PRP takes these results one step further. Because PRP is rich in natural growth factors, it accelerates healing and can lead to more dramatic skin rejuvenation. Many patients choose this combination when they want quicker and more comprehensive results compared to standard microneedling alone.

What to Expect during Treatment

Before a microneedling session, our team will apply a topical numbing cream before starting to help make the procedure more comfortable. When doing microneedling with PRP, a small blood sample is first drawn and processed to concentrate the platelets while the topical numbing is applied. Once the PRP is ready, it's applied to the skin and microneedled in so it can sink deep into the tissue.

Both options take about 30 – 60 minutes and involve minimal downtime. Most patients experience some redness, swelling, or sensitivity similar to a mild sunburn, which should subside within a few days. Results develop gradually over the course of the next 2 weeks as the skin produces new collagen and elastin.

Choosing between Traditional Microneedling and PRP

So, which option is right for you? Traditional microneedling is a great treatment for those who want to improve skin tone or texture. For patients seeking a greater boost in healing and results, or patients with significant skin texture issues such as acne scarring, microneedling with PRP may be the better choice. During a consultation with one of our nurses at Starr MedSpa, we'll review your skin concerns, lifestyle, and goals before recommending an approach.
